I’ve made a lot of hot toddies over the years, and this is the version I keep coming back to! It’s simple, balanced, and not overly sweet. The main difference with this Apple Cider Hot Toddy is using a little apple cider, which gives the drink more flavor without making it too sweet. It also gives it some cozy spice flavor without being overly infused.
It’s one of my favorite things to cocktails when it’s cold outside and feel like a hug in a mug (with a bourbon kick). It comes together quickly, uses ingredients I usually already have, and feels comforting and light. I really love how the honey softens to bourbon.
I also like serving these with a clove-studded lemon wheel and a cinnamon stick, not because it’s fancy, but because it adds a slight aroma as you drink. As with many recipes, it’s the little details that make a big difference.
This recipe makes two drinks, which feels just right for a quiet night in or an easy after-dinner cocktail. Plus, it’s easy to double (or triple) the recipe if you have guests!

Serves: 2 (8-ounce) Cocktails
Apple Cider Hot Toddy Ingredients
- 8 ounces water
- 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 2 ounces apple cider
- 1 ounce honey
- 4 ounces bourbon
- Whole cloves, for garnish
- Lemon wheels, for garnish
- Cinnamon Sticks, for garnish
How to Make an Apple Cider Hot Toddy
- Insert a few cloves into the lemon wheels. Set aside to use for garnish.
- Add the water to a small sauce pan and bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, add the lemon juice, apple cider, and honey. Mix well until the honey is dissolved. Remove from heat and add the bourbon. Stir to combine.
- Pour into mugs and garnish with the prepared lemon wheels and cinnamon sticks.
Tips
- I always add the bourbon after removing the pan from the heat. It keeps the flavor smoother and prevents the alcohol from cooking off too aggressively.
- If your apple cider is especially sweet, you can slightly reduce the honey next time. This drink should be gently sweet, not syrupy.
- These are best enjoyed right away, while everything is hot and fragrant.
