Caramelized French Onion Dip

this caramelized french onion dip is the perfect creamy side dish for any holiday dinner

When it comes to appetizers, I’m all about simple and delicious dishes that I don’t have to overthink. I feel the same way about wine which is why I serve this Caramelized French Onion Dip with a glass of Pinot Noir. It’s the perfect pair for holiday entertaining. I love this Pinot in particular because it’s always a crowd pleaser and takes the stress out of selecting a wine that everyone will love for a holiday party, girls’ night, or even a dinner date.

How To Make My Caramelized French Onion Dip

Ingredients

  • 2 yellow onions, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 8 ounce cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 cup sour cream OR creme fraiche
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon Cayenne pepper
  • 3 tablespoons chives, finely chopped DIVIDED
  • Crinkle cut potato chips for serving

Step-By-Step Recipe Method

  1. In a large skillet, heat butter over medium heat. Add onions, salt, and a pinch of sugar. Cook, stirring frequently, for about 5 to 8 minutes. Then reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 30 minutes or until the onions are caramelized and golden brown. Set aside to cool. (I like using a little bit of water to deglaze the pan and speed up the process a bit)
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add cream cheese, sour cream and combine. Then add caramelized onions, onion powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, salt to taste, and 1 ½ tablespoons of chives. Mix until well combined.
  3. Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with remaining chives. Serve with crinkle cut potato chips, dig in and enjoy! You can also top with caviar if you want to get real fancy. Cheers!
