Manti (Armenian Dumplings)

You guys love family recipes and with my husband, Andrew, being half Armenian, I wanted to share a recipe from his culture. Thankfully my friend Nicole from Kale Junkie shared her mom’s Manti recipe which is a classic Armenian dish. Like she says, it’s truly a labor of love and the beauty of it is that it brings family and friends together. You’ve got to try these comforting dumplings. Note: other cultures have their own take on Manti, this is just the one she grew up with and it was delish!

What You'll Need:

+ 1 small onion⁣ (I used yellow)

+ 1 pound ground beef (or lamb or turkey)⁣

+ 2 cloves garlic

+ 2 tsp paprika⁣

+ 1 tsp salt & 1 tsp black pepper⁣

+ 1/3 cup parsley (about 1/2 bunch)

+ Wonton wrappers⁣

+ 4 tbsp butter, melted (for greasing pan & brushing mantis) ⁣

Broth:

+ 1 cup tomato sauce⁣

+ 3 cups chicken broth⁣

+ Salt & pepper⁣

Yogurt sauce :

+ 1 cup Greek yogurt⁣

+ 2 cloves garlic, mashed⁣

+ 1 tsp salt

+ Sumac for garnish

Steps:

1. Add onion to a food processor and finely pulse. Add the beef, garlic, paprika, salt, pepper, and parsley and pulse until mixed. Transfer meat mixture to a bowl.

2. Cut wonton wrappers into four small squares. Put a tiny meatball on each square. Dip fingers in water to dab on each corner of the wonton so you can close them. Make boats as shown here.

3. Melt 2 tbsp of butter and use it to grease a baking pan. Line up the Manti on the baking sheet (the closer together, the better). Use remaining melted butter to brush on top of the Manti.

4. Bake at 400˚F for 40 minutes or until golden and crispy (every oven is different so keep an eye on them – for my oven it was 35 min).

5. To make broth, add the ingredients to a small pot and bring to a simmer.

6. For the garlic sauce, add yogurt, garlic and salt to a bowl and mix well.

7. To serve, add a handful of Manti to a bowl, ladle broth on top, followed by yogurt sauce. Sprinkle sumac on top and enjoy!
